Riesling white wine is produced from Inspector Grape’s favorite grape! It is extremely sad that the public still thinks of Riesling as a “sweet” wine when 90% of all Riesling in the UK is dry! So many people are missing out on beautiful Riesling when choosing white wine not to mention perfectly paired Riesling food! We put 4 top Rieslings to the test, some cheap and some, well, not so cheap!

The Naked Grape, Riesling, Pfalz, Germany, 2007

2007 The Naked Grape Riesling, Pfalz- Germany, £6.49 Waitrose

This Riesling is exactly what it says on the label: No nonsense, what you see is what you get – Riesling white wine!
It is nice and dry with a slight almost spritzy green apple on the finish.

Its fresh, crisp with a slight spicy finish, delicious as an aperitif or perfectly paired Riesling food in this case is a chicken salad.

2007 Gobelsberg Riesling, Austria, £8.49 Waitrose

This was delicious wine and Riesling is showing us here just how crisp and dry it really can be.

This white wine has a ripe spicy pear on the finish which makes it delicious.  Perfectly paired Riesling food here fatty food like fish and chips, make your own, its great fun!

Trimbach Riesling, Alsace, France, 2007

Gobelsberg Riesling, Austria, 2007

2007 Trimbach Riesling, Alsace – France, £13.49 Waitrose

Inspector Grape adores Alsace and it never fails to deliver. Once again its great Riesling white wine and Dawid loves it.

It’s light gold in colour and and then it slaps you in the face with spicy pears and a touch of lychee, just enough not to make it perfumy!

This is an excellent top quality wine with a minerally finish. The Lamborghini of the wine world!!

Our perfectly paired Riesling food here is delicious pork chops and a mushroom sauce.

2007 Dr. Loosen Riesling, Mosel – Germany, £11.99 Waitrose

The last bottle of Dr. Loosen was a gift and it was delicious so lets see what Dawid thinks of this one! An explosion of red apple and pear in the mouth, Inspector Grape thinks there is a whole basket of apples in his mouth, slightly sweeter than the ones before but all in all delicious.

Enjoy it with fresh Scallops.

We hear that the mineralliness in the wine comes from the slate it grows on and ensures a lovely dry finish on the palate.

We love high street wine.  We’ve pillaged Waitrose wine aisles and served it with Tuna Tartare or Vegetarian Risotto – try it yourself.
